Garbage For Habitat: 2010 Brooklyn Arts Council grant
In 2004, butterfly numbers plummeted to around 100 million, the lowest ever recorded. Bee's are dying mysteriously one hive at a time. Creating a space where Butterflies and Bee's can live in Brooklyn would help with rehabilitation. I propose to design and build butterfly hibernation boxes, and Native Bee Nests out of reclaimed/ found materials from the street of Brooklyn, and install them throughout Red Hook. Not only built within the technical requirements, they will have unique design features to showcase objects and materials that were saved from the landfill.
I will also plant 100 Butterfly and Bee bushes in Red Hook in the Spring of 2010 + 2011 to help promote new habitat for our little helpers.
